Speech Pathology

Speech pathology services across Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group (FSFHG) treat inpatients and outpatients at both Fiona Stanley Hospital and Fremantle Hospital (external site).

Our speech pathologists assess, diagnose and treat people experiencing difficulties with:

  • swallowing
  • communication
  • speech
  • language
  • voice.

The Speech Pathology department works as part of the multidisciplinary team to:

  • assess and manage patients with communication and/or swallowing difficulties
  • provide specialist services in stroke, traumatic brain injury, head and neck cancer, tracheostomy, voice, motor neurone disease, functional neurological disorder, Parkinson’s disease and paediatric feeding disorders.

Specialist clinics are run to deliver instrumental swallow studies including fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and videofluoroscopy swallow studies (VFSS).

Outpatient clinic locations

Your outpatient appointment letter will advise whether your appointment is at Fiona Stanley Hospital or Fremantle Hospital (external site) and the location of the outpatient. Details for our outpatient clinics can be found in the right-hand column of this page.

Home based rehabilitation videos

The following videos complement our speech pathology treatments at Fiona Stanley and Fremantle hospitals. Your speech pathologist will recommend the best, evidenced based treatment for you.

Swallowing rehabilitation

Your speech pathologist may recommend you use an expiratory muscle strength trainer (EMST) to help maintain or improve your ability to swallow food, fluid, saliva and medication.

This video will guide you through a complete EMST practice session. You can pause, fast forward or rewind the video at any point as desired.

Voice rehabilitation

If you have Parkinson’s disease, your speech pathologist may recommend you complete a series of voice activities on a regular basis. These can help you maintain and improve how loud your voice is and how clearly you speak.

This video demonstrates a complete voice strengthening practice session including a warm-up. You can pause, fast forward or rewind the video at any point as desired.
