Medical Oncology Symptom and Urgent Review Clinic

The Medical Oncology Symptom and Urgent Review Clinic (SURC) provides specialist support for medical oncology patients experiencing side effects during or within three months of their cancer treatment.

Patients who have concerns or are feeling unwell, or their support person, can phone the clinic for advice and support from an experienced cancer nurse. A specialist oncology doctor is also available as required.

The clinic is based at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

How the clinic works

The clinic provides specialist advice to patients who have a medical concern related to their cancer or treatment. These concerns can include, but are not limited to:

  • a temperature of 37.7 °C or higher
  • nausea or vomiting
  • diarrhoea or constipation
  • difficulty passing urine
  • uncontrolled or ongoing pain
  • numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • mouth ulcers
  • not able to eat or drink
  • tiredness/fatigue
  • skin rash
  • new cough
  • shortness of breath
  • problems with your PICC line or infusaport.

It is important that patients or their support person, call the clinic nurse before coming to the clinic. Often we can give advice over the phone to help manage symptoms so you don’t need to travel to hospital when you are already unwell.

To guide the type of care you need, the clinic nurse will ask you some questions, including about your current symptoms. The clinic nurse may then:

  • provide you with self-care advice on how to manage or improve these symptoms
  • make a booking for you to come into the clinic for review
  • advise you to go to your general practitioner (GP) or nearest emergency department (ED), as well as phone call the GP or ED to let them know you are coming.

In some instances, the nurse may ask you to do more than just one of the above activities.
