Fiona Stanley Hospital Oncology Department Clinical Nurse Consultant Barbara O’Callaghan has been named as a finalist in the 2018 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA).

Barbara is one of three finalists in the Excellence in Registered Nursing category.

Barbara has been a nurse for almost 30 years and enjoys knowing she makes a difference to the lives of her patients.

“I help navigate them through a very difficult time in their life, get them through treatment and all the complications,” she said.

“When they are finished and life is returning to normal, I know what I have done has made a difference in their life.”

Barbara, who comes from a family of nurses, with her four older sisters all in the industry, is humbled to be named a finalist.

“I feel very proud and honoured to be a finalist in this year’s awards, there are so many great nurses out there doing a great job every day.

“I can only do what I do because of the great team I work with. Cancer services is an amazing area to work in and being acknowledged in this way raises the profile of all cancer care health professionals and the work we do.”

Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) Executive Director Janet Zagari said Barbara was an enormous asset to the oncology team and her patients.

“Barbara makes an incredible difference to the lives of her patients, I am delighted to see her efforts and professionalism recognised,” she said.

  • Mr Suki Loe, Nurse Director of Informatics at South Metropolitan Health Service for the category Excellence in Leadership
  • Mandy Major, Rockingham General Hospital’s Advanced Skilled Enrolled Nurse in Mental Health in the category of Excellence in Enrolled Nursing.
